Helping Brian Through Cold and Hard Times

This past week, Houston has seen unprecedented freezing weather and power outages. For most, it started out fun, there was more snow in Houston than ever before, or at least since anyone can remember! But then the bitter cold weather and power outages reminded us how vulnerable we are without power. The freezing cold temperatures affected plants, animals, and, of course, humans. Many homeless people were unfortunately stuck outside in the below 30 degree (F) weather. One of those people was Brain, a local homeless man whom I’ve made acquaintance with. I visited him during the first snow and found him lying in his small homemade trailer off of his bike. That day, I brought him warm meals, more warm clothing and blankets, and hot water to help him survive in the cold. My family even offered for him to stay in a vacant apartment unit for a few days, but he politely declined. Over the next few days, I cooked warm meals and heated up water for Brian.
