Helping Brian Through Cold and Hard Times
This past week, Houston has seen unprecedented freezing weather and power outages. For most, it started out fun, there was more snow in Houston than ever before, or at least since anyone can remember! But then the bitter cold weather and power outages reminded us how vulnerable we are without power. The freezing cold temperatures affected plants, animals, and, of course, humans. Many homeless people were unfortunately stuck outside in the below 30 degree (F) weather. One of those people was Brain, a local homeless man whom I’ve made acquaintance with. I visited him during the first snow and found him lying in his small homemade trailer off of his bike. That day, I brought him warm meals, more warm clothing and blankets, and hot water to help him survive in the cold. My family even offered for him to stay in a vacant apartment unit for a few days, but he politely declined. Over the next few days, I cooked warm meals and heated up water for Brian. As the days got warmer, I was able to go to the store and buy some more food for him. This CAS experience represents learning outcome six because homelessness and hunger is an urgent global issue that we should all help out in whatever way we can. Helping people during a time of crisis and during cold days is also an issue of global significance. I am happy to be a part of helping people on a larger scale, by first starting with our local friend Brian.
