PSAT Tutoring My Brother

Recently, I’ve started working with my brother on practicing for his freshman year PSAT test. Back in October I took my senior year SAT test and learned a lot about the material on the test and about how the test works. This experience has allowed me to be able to help my brother with his PSAT test. I started out by having him take a benchmark PSAT so we could both see where he stands, his strengths and weaknesses. He did very well on this test and afterwards, we went through each problem he missed or had trouble on and worked through it with clear explanations. It’s a long process but a very helpful one because it allows him to understand his mistakes and hopefully not make them again. After the benchmark test, I went through each section of the test, giving pointers and advice on how to come about it. I taught him some new material in the english and math sections and will continue to do so when new problems come up. I helped him develop a study plan including online practice from Khan Academy, taking individual PSAT sections, taking full PSATs, and studying new material. Over the course of this process, I’ve noticed that I’m strong at teaching material and giving instruction and advice. However, I struggle with following up on how my brother is doing because I am also busy with my work. I do my best to make sure he is on track and teach him when needed, but it would be beneficial for me to work on managing my time and blocking out time in my schedule dedicated to helping him. This tutoring and guidance experience aligns with CAS learning outcome one because I have identified my strengths and my areas for improvement. With the insight from this reflection, I’m excited to continue tutoring my brother, but this time, more effectively!
