NHS Event: Hope Stone

For our first NHS service event of the Spring semester, we worked with Hope Stone at Marshall Middle School. In groups, we painted two rooms, moved some boxes, and laid out flooring in the dance room. I was a part of the group that painted a room and our task was to paint one wall yellow as an accent wall and to paint all the other walls with an eggshell white color. The first thing we did was move all of the furniture to the middle of the room. Then we taped the edges of windows and boards with painters tape. We all got a quick lesson on how to use the paint rollers. Some of us used the rollers while others used smaller brushes to get details. This was my first time painting a room and I learned a lot through this event. At first, it was a challenge because it was something that I had never done before and I was worried about messing up and making a mistake. I soon got over that fear and I just had to believe in myself and I overcame that initial challenge and developed useful skills in the process. This experience represents learning outcome 2 because I undertook a challenge and while overcoming it, I developed new skills in the process.
