Cooking for the Homeless

This weekend, I cooked meals for the homeless! My idea of cooking meals for the homeless came from reading about how the homeless are severely impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. There is a shortage of food and water at shelters and fewer donations are being made to the homeless. I am fortunate enough to be in a position to help others, so I decided to cook meals for the homeless. I decided to make beans and rice and so I ordered the food online and picked it up a few days later. The night before I cooked, I made sure to soak the beans because they were dried beans, so at night I prepped and soaked them. The next day, Saturday the 2th, I began cooking right after breakfast. I began by cooking the beans and while that cooked, I cooked rice. In between waiting for the food to cook, I filled up containers with water because the homeless are also in need of a lot of water. I cooked for several hours and packaged each meal. In the end, I had about 37 individual meals and 5 family-sized meals. I have done this before for my NHS project, but being able to do it again on my own time was so nice because I wanted to help as much as I can. This experience reflects learning outcome 6 because hunger among the homeless is a global issue that is now exacerbated with the Coronavirus pandemic. Now, it is more important than ever to give back and help as much as we can.
